OHMSETT - Our Official Test Facility
Today the X PRIZE Foundation embarks on the most exciting part of the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE journey ? field testing at OHMSETT, a BOEMRE facility. You have heard us mention our partners at OHMSETT before, and you are pretty sure you understand that this is the Official Test Facility of the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE, but what exactly is it that OHMSETT does? OHMSETT, which stands for ?Oil and Hazardous Materials Simulated Environmental Test Tank?, also known as the National Oil Spill Response Research & Renewable Energy Test Facility, is an above-ground, concrete test tank, which is one of the largest in the world, holding 2.6 million gallons of salt water. Because of its size, it is large enough to test full-size oil recovery equipment, by replicating true open water dynamic applications. Within this tank, teams are able to test different system prototypes and technologies, study oil behavior, and learn more about its characteristics. This unique facility will allow our teams the opportunity to learn more about their technology by testing in real environmental conditions, allowing them to redesign and develop more effective procedures for responding to future oil spills. Unlike open water testing, OHMSETT?s facilities are able to control test conditions (such as still and wave tests replicating open waters), which is an integral part of the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE, maintaining fairness and impartiality among all team tests.
With that said, the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE will be the first time OHMSETT will be filling their pool with 1 inch of oil covering the entire surface of the test tank pool, creating a unique environment for this never-before attempted test. By Monday, the test tank will be ready for our first competing team ? Vor-Tek ? to begin their on the ground testing.
Good luck to all the teams, and thank you to OHMSETT for this incredible opportunity. Without your remarkable facility, our teams would not be able to test these future technologies, which we are confident will change the way oil is removed from the surface of the ocean.
More on Monday!
